If you ask any of the HIVE members what their favorite body part to train is you will get a variety of answers. If you then ask what body part they have the most trouble training you will most likely get a different answer. Over the next few weeks I will go into a little bit of detail on different ways to approach your training. I think most people will agree one of the hardest body parts or muscle groups to train are the legs. Today will focus on the squat and how to execute a squat to achieve your specific goals. Body position during the lowering portion of the squat will play a big role in what muscles will do the majority of the work. If working and strengthening the front of your legs is your goal,Ā  a quad dominant squat will be the best choice. The quads or quadriceps are made up of 4 individual muscles, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius. All 4 of these muscles work to extend the knee as well as stabilize it. A more narrow stance squat with a more vertical or upright torso, as well as maximum knee flexion will stress the quadriceps the most. In contrast a hip dominant squat is where the hips are driven back and the torso is tilted forward. A slightly wider stance can be used here to engage the glutes, hamstrings and adductors or inner thigh. The squat is a great exercise when done correctly to develop strength and size in the lower body.

We are humbled and thrilled to commemorate the one-year anniversary of opening our doors today! Little did we know when we opened our doors on 1/18/2020 that we’d be closed exactly 60 days later by Covid...nor could we predict the uncertainty that followed, the decision to re-open early out of necessity, and most importantly, the overwhelming support we’d receive from our community and Members. We are humbled beyond measure and promise that we will do everything we can to continue improving, learning, and evolving to meet the needs and wants of our customers. We thank all of you for making Hive a place that new guests repeatedly refer to as ā€œhaving the best vibesā€...that’s a reflection of a hard-working, awesome staff, but equally as important, the quality of Members we’re privileged to have!! You peeps are the absolute best and we are forever grateful to each of you! šŸ™

As we launch into Year 2, we will endeavor to further improve our level of service, innovation, and all-around guest experience! We are adding ā€œFusionā€ classes very soon which will combine two elements into one class (Cycle/Bootcamp, for instance) and will continue to find ways to push the limits of our offerings!! šŸ’Ŗ

I was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. I wasn’t quite ready to leave my Famously Hot hometown, so after graduating high school, I attended the University of South Carolina. I earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting, and I now work for a CPA firm here in Charlotte! 
.
I grew up staying active through sports, but never really enjoyed working out on my own. About 8 years ago, my dad somehow convinced me to go to a 5:30am cycle class with him - now I’m hooked! I’ve gone to so many different spin classes over the years, and it’s only made me love it more. I knew I wanted to become an instructor someday, and I’m so excited to have this opportunity at Hive!

In my free time, I love spending time with friends (hey @tay_m_simmons!) & family, traveling, reading, and watching way too much Real Housewives on Bravo.

What’s up Hive Fitness Fam? My name is Troy (@tr What’s up Hive Fitness Fam? My name is Troy (@troyeography) and I am a yoga instructor and and professional choreographer based right here in the QC! 

I began dancing at the ripe age of 14 where I spent over 40 hours a week in the studio training in jazz, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, acrobatics, and hip-hop. After graduating high-school I immediately began my journey as a professional dancer. Based out of Miami, Florida I began traveling nationally and internationally as dancer with Royal Caribbean, while choreographing and performing in various commercial projects around the country. It wasn’t until I began choreographing full time in 2011 that I discovered my passion for yoga. 

Over the last 9 years, I have practiced under some of the most notable teachers in country, became a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher and have taught thousands of yogis in North and South Carolina. With a strong focus on sequencing, transitions and breath-work (I like to call it ā€˜beat to breath’ movement) I create a powerful fusion of yoga and dance. But don’t let that scare you! I believe there is a dancer inside all of us just waiting to show up.

I’m so excited to be a part of the Hive Family and can’t wait to see you on your mats starting NEXT WEEK! Peace and love, y’all!!

Hey gang! Brent here, head trainer at Hive- wanted Hey gang! Brent here, head trainer at Hive- wanted to offer a little insight on using the pec deck properly! It’s a very popular machine and when used correctly can really help chest strength and development.

The natural function of the chest is to bring the arms to the center of your body. So doing an exercise like a Pec Fly or Dumbell Fly that follows this logic makes sense. The Pectoral muscle lengthens and shortens during these exercises. For example, when your arms are stretched out to the sides in a Pec Deck machine this is the lengthened position of the chest. Some call this the stretched position. When your arms and hands are closest together in front of you this is the shortened position or the contracted position. The complete range of motion that a machine is capable of may not match the range of motion of a muscle. Range of motion can also vary person to person. Now, how do you execute this exercise so that you create the most tension on the pecs? If the arms and elbows are completely straight the biceps limit the range of motion in the stretched position. If the elbows are bent you limit the range of motion in the shortened position. So if you allow a slight bend in the elbows in the lengthened position and extend your arms in the shortened position you maximize the range of motion of the pecs. Allowing your arms to bend slightly when starting the rep and straighten as you finish the rep allows for the most tension and also the most effective range of motion for the chest.
